Splitting the Signals
A loaded Eastbound unit Ethanol train splits the 3 signals at Portage, PA as they grind up the west slope of the Alleghenies. The two lead engines are of little consequence, but the third unit is one of a kind at NS. The 3528 was one of 85 units purchased a few years ago from Helm leasing but its lineage is a little more interesting than that. Built as BN 7149 in 1979 it was modified in the early 1990s to burn natural gas, and even received an SD45-esque flared radiator section. After several years, the engine was returned to diesel fuel but has retained the flared radiators and is the only such unit on the NS roster, making for quite the rare catch.
