assembly house undercroft

ASSEMBLY HOUSE THEATRE STREET

The undercroft is made of brick and consists of two bays with diagonal ribs with subsidiary ridge and cross ribs. The minor ribs are hollow chamfered. There are wall arches and wall piers and a very long pointed barrel vault to the north with a blocked low side-chamber on the east side with a blocked opening above. It is not normally open to the public but can be visited on Heritage Open Days on bookable tours (in early September). It is not in use but there are plans to restore it and open it more frequently in the future. It is well worth visiting.
