Korean Street Vendors

During my Winter break in Japan, I made a short visit to Korea for a few

days. One thing that caught me most by surprise was how common it was for

people to speak Japanese, English, or even both. Perhaps not fluently, but

enough to communicate. In Japan, children are taught English from a very

early age, but most people do not actually speak or understand English. In

Korea, many people are at least bilingual. Even many of the street vendors

I interacted with knew at least a little English and/or Japanese. I do not

know much about language education in Korea, but from what I observed they

seem to be doing something right.
