Exposure Value
When light passes through the rectangular window on the front of the camera (a Brownie Starmeter from the early 1960s) , the light meter reacts and moves the pointer to the proposed exposure value. The knurled ring around the lens is turned to set that value. It is a simplified system to catch the relationship between aperture and shutter speed , in order to get a correctly exposed picture .
