While there are many pathways in gender transition, access to reassignment surgery of often guarded by gatekeepers (see card 02) and some of these require the person to “live as the opposite gender” for a period of time before they are allowed to have surgery. Even if that is the case (and not everyone wants, needs, or has surgery) other considerations (money, stability, et cetera) often mean that such a person will have to wait anyway before they can obtain such.
