New Bondi Pavilion
We're in a La Nina year, so while the Bondi Pavilion has been reopened for a couple of weeks the weather hasn't been great. The previous 95-year-old building was falling apart and has had a $48 million facelift. The old amphitheater inside has been replaced by a courtyard large enough to fit 2000 people. There's a 'Bondi Story' room with an interactive history wall. Outside, the new Italianate roof tiles are brighter than the earlier Spanish-style tiles.
Bondi Beach has changed a lot over the past decade with new apartments providing the backdrop. Work continues on the lifeguard abutments which were riddled with concrete cancer. These used to be the exit and entry tunnels from the men's and women's change areas of the pavilion back in the 1930's, which came half way down the beach until dismantled after World War II. The tunnels under the roadway remain, although no longer functional, used as storage space.
The beach usually starts to get crowded in October, but not right now. Hopefully we'll see a bit of sunshine later in the year!
