Broad - Out

Australia just closed the cricket Ashes series against England 4-0, continuing the recent trend of home sides thrashing opposition. England's Stuart Broad here fends off a Patrick Cummins bumper with his glove, and is caught behind by wicketkeeper Tim Paine.

In this series Australia ruled supreme and England didn't really seem up to the challenge, although they had the better of the play at moments in a couple of early tests. Steven Smith scored 687 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 137, and Australia's top four bowlers each took 20 wickets. England captain Joe Root had a respectable series with 378 runs and a 47 average and James Anderson took 17 wickets at 27, but England largely failed to be competitive with both bat and ball despite most tests going five days. England were not helped by Stuart Broad having a poor series (only 11 wickets at 47) and Moeen Ali (just 5 wickets at 115).

The stands are a bit depleted because this was day 5, and Test matches usually don't go this distance. I think about 17,000 people turned up to make a 'gold coin' donation (either $1 or $2) to enter, which sure beats $179 for a platinum seat on the sold out days 1-3 and the mostly sold out day 4.
