Brahma Muhutra

It is written, we get maximum benefits when we do things during Brahma Muhutra, the time between 4 am and 6 am. In fact, I wrote my entire book Am I A Hindu? during Brahma Muhutra.

There are varied opinions about exactly which hours constitute brahma Muhurta.

Some say Brahma Muhurta is a period of two muhurtas (time unit of forty-eight minutes), or about one and a half hours before dawn.

Some say Brahma Muhutra starts at 3 am and ends at 6 am.

The tradition associated with Sivananda Yoga says it begins at 4am.

The tradition of Surat Shabda Yoga includes 3am through dawn in the amritavela; “elixir” or “ambrosial” hours, as brahmamuhurta is also known. As this is the tradition into which I am initiated, this is the time span I will consider in this exploration.

In the Brahmanas , ( the collection of ancient Indian texts with commentaries on the four Vedas ) it is written , muhūrta denotes a division of time: one-thirtieth of a day, or a period of forty-eight minutes.

Brahma Muhutra is the time, when celestial beings rest and there is less THOUGH ACTIVITY in the ether and as such we can think clearly and meditate very well.

Brahma Mhutra is the time when sattva manifests itself in us.

Essentially, we are all a combination of the three gunas sattva, rajas and tamas. Brahma muhurta is the time when our sattvika content comes to the forefront.

It is the ideal time for thinking and reflection on the truths laid down in Vedanta. Rajas manifests itself after 6 a.m.

It is the time when the day’s activities begin, children have to get ready for school, mothers have to prepare food for the family and office-goers begin getting ready for work.

These mark the beginning of a cycle of frenetic activity.

It is after sundown that tamas begins to manifest itself. A time when all indulgent activities begin.
