Little Wood Satyr Butterfly

Megisto cymela

These butterflies are a lovely chestnut brown with darker lines across their wings. They have characteristic dark eyespots surrounded by bright yellow. Little Wood Satyrs are common in forest settings, especially the ones near prairies and meadows. The males can often be encountered in the shady areas as they search for females. They have a slower flight compared to the skippers and although they fly close to the ground, they will occasionally reach the tops of trees. These beautiful butterflies mostly feed on sap from trees and are a wonderful addition to your wooded areas.
