Bataviasche Kunstkring, Menteng, Batavia, 1914Architect : P.A.J. Moojen (1879-1955)

This premises was designed by P.A.J. Moojen. The building was constructed in 1912-13 and inaugurated on Friday 17th April 1914 by Governor-Generale of Nederlandsch Indies AWF Idenburg as the overseer of Nederlandsch-Indie Kunstkring.

The 1st Floor was used for office and Stam en Weyns Resto, whereas the 2nd Floor was used for performing art and exhibition hall.The realism of architectural in 20th century means a principal role that emphasized on building construction such as columns, wall, stone decorations that blend to create the beauty and the simplicity itself.

While eclecticism emphasized on the beauty and the meaning of symbols.

THE FOUNDATIONThis building spent for about of 150 Gulden, and need some creditor, such as: Batviasche Zee-en Brandassurantie Mij (Company of Sea and Fire Insurance in Batavia) Government bonds NV Bouwploeg (Property Developer in Gondangdia)

Others: Factorij der Nederlansche Handel Mij, Firma Erdmann en Sielcken, GA Pieper, Nederlandsch-Indische Handelsbank, Maclaine Watson & Co, Bataafsche Petroleum Matschappij, NV de Bouwploeg, and Jenderal J Ph Ermeling.

A ROLL OF HISTORY: A PART OF INDONESIAN ARCHITECTURE This building is an important part of the Indonesian architecture development, because it was designed by modern customized for tropical climate like Indonesia. We can say that it was a prototype of the essential tropical house or building in Indonesia. In addition, the design represents the school thought of rationalism that emphasizing the construction of building that leaving the former classical designed.

RUNDOWN OF KUNSTKRING1914 – 1920s Stam en Weyns opened their resto in 1st Floor.

1925 – The First Exhibition of Indische Architecture.1936 – Masterpiece Exhibition: March Chagall, van Gogh, Pablo Piccaso.1936 – Exhibition of Czechoslovakia’s Crystal 1935 – Performing Arts of Silver Instrument 1934-37 – Exhibition of Books and Paintings about Old Batavia.

JP Graaf van Limburg Stirum and Ch.M. van Deventer were the members of Bataviasche Kunstkring.
