Okmeydanı

I spent three years in Istanbul, and the negative above was my final exposure. I was never after dramatic, "pretty" pictures, but rather images that reflected what a typical moment in this city of 12 million(?) people felt like day to day. The Okmeydanı section of Istanbul and its densely housed population always fascinated me, as it seemed to reflect the struggle for space, adequate employment, services, etc, that cities of this scale the world over now face. I have an enormous respect for how the Turks are reconciling their growth and integration with the rest of world, and with the norms they uphold in their society to help them meet the challenges they face. It's a beautiful place, with a beautiful culture that I hope to stay connected to.
