Messing Around in Çavuşın
Some of the caves in the Cappadocia region of Turkey were occupied as dwellings, schools and religious temples as early as the Hititte period (3000BC-1700BC). Much later (1071-1299), safe havens and churches were carved into their interiors when Byzantine monks fled the invading Seljuk Turks. In the particular village above, some of the churches, such as the church of St. John the Baptist, were carved into the rock face in the 5th century AD. Many of the dwellings in this particular shot were built in the 1960's, and later closed by government officials when soft rock collapsed on local residents.
