The construction of the castle began in 1613 by the Cavendish family, on the site of a medieval castle founded in the 12th century by the Peverel family. It was designed to entertain and impress and has spectacular views over Derbyshire. Bess of Hardwick's son Charles Cavendish bought Bolsover and made it his main residence of the time.
Bolsover Castle is a Grade I Listed Building, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and in the care of English Heritage.
