The Battles of Nivelle 1813 - Roman Bridge at Amotz

The Battles of the Pyrenees were the final chapter of the French occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. They are recorded as separate battles but, following the route this year, it is clear, given the time and space available, it was one rolling battle. By the turn of the year Wellington was in France but he held his advance to wait for the news of the intentions other European allies. He also was keen to win the support of French peasants en route who had suffered badly under Napoleon’s crippling fund raising for his wars (the reason he sent back much of the Spanish army who would seek revenge on the French).

In photographs it was impossible for me to capture the whole battlefield (as with the other Flickr sets) --- there was too much to find and, also, much has been built on in the C20th.
