An imposing view

Cassel is another of our regular stops when we 'hop' over the channel to France and Belgium. Being close to the Belgian border the Grand Place has a very Flemish feel to it.

Located on the top of one of the few hills in this part of the world, Cassel has been a strategic location during the many conflicts that have taken place in this area over the years. It is suggested that it was the hill at Cassel that the Duke of York tried to climb with his army during one of the Anglo/French disagreements back in 1793. An attempt that is imortalised in the rhyme:

The Grand old Duke of York he had ten thousand men

He marched them up to the top of the hill

And he marched them down again.

When they were up, they were up

And when they were down, they were down

And when they were only halfway up

They were neither up nor down.

This is a seven shot (portrait) panorama stitched together using Photoshop Elements 8. The sky was enhanced by use of my ND4 neutral density graduated filter.
