Vieste è un comune italiano di 14.200 abitanti della provincia di Foggia, in Puglia. Stazione balneare garganica, per la qualità delle sue acque di balneazione è stata più volte insignita della Bandiera Blu dalla Foundation for Environmental Education. Fa parte del Parco Nazionale del Gargano e della Comunità Montana del Gargano. È il comune più orientale del promontorio del Gargano e della provincia di Foggia. La particolare dislocazione urbanistica di Vieste è legata alla natura carsica del Promontorio Garganico, caratterizzato da strati rocciosi spesso erosi dall'azione marina. Il nucleo dell'abitato sorge infatti su una piccola penisola rocciosa, dalla forma più o meno simmetrica, caratteristica per le sue tre baie separate da due punte.Innumerevoli reperti archeologici testimoniano l'insediamento degli antichi Greci e dei Romani a Vieste.Dopo essere stata amministrata dai bizantini, cadde sotto la dominazione dei longobardi. In epoca normanna e poi sveva si ebbe lo sviluppo urbanistico della città come si vede oggi (Castello). In seguito, finì sotto la dominazione degli Angiò.Come altre città pugliesi, fu spesso esposta ad attacchi provenienti dal mare. Si ricordi il pesante saccheggio da parte dei Veneziani nel 1239. Uno dei popoli più pericolosi, per Vieste, erano i Turchi, i quali compirono incursioni anche sanguinarie. Particolarmente grave fu l'episodio di Dragut Rais, che nel 1554 fece decapitare migliaia di viestani. Il fatto è ancora ricordato da una targa presso la cattedrale (pietra di Chianca Amara). Entrata stabilmente a far parte del Regno di Napoli e poi delle due Sicilie, fu amministrata dai Borboni fino all'unità d'Italia. Da wikipedia

The fact is still remembered by a plaque at the Cathedral (stone of Chianca Amara).
