La Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore di Barletta
La Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore ubicata nella zona più antica della città,sorge su preesistenti strutture ,una necropoli di età dauno romana e due edifici basilicati del VI e del X - XI secolo.
Nella forma attuale,essa è il risultato composito di complesse vicende costruttive avviate nel XII secolo e concluse attraverso fasi alterne alla fine del XVII secolo. Edificata nel XII secolo ed ampliata nel XIV, la cattedrale è caratterizzata da un portale rinascimentale sovrastato da una ricca cornice, da un meraviglioso rosone e da altri due piccoli portali laterali. Sulla sinistra della facciata svetta maestosa l’elegante torre campanaria ornata da varie bifore, la quale presenta alla base un arco di passaggio. L’interno del duomo, a tre navate, è completato da un meraviglioso abside, da un presbiterio in stile gotico, da un ciborio ornato da capitelli in stile orientale e da un pergamo duecentesco per la proclamazione delle letture bibliche. Di notevole interesse anche la cripta, che conserva ancora i resti di una preesistente basilica paleocristiana risalente al X secolo, ed il cosiddetto Tesoro, dove sono custoditi arredi, dipinti ed avori e oreficerie di fattura islamica. La chiesa ha raggiunto il suo massimo splendore durante le crociate, fungendo da punto di transito per i pellegrini che si recavano in Terrasanta.Nel 1459 con la dinastia Aragonese il nuovo re, Ferdinando I, fu incoronato proprio nella cattedrale di Barletta .Da wikipedia

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, located in an older part of the city, built on a pre-existing structures age necropolis dauno and two buildings basilicati of the 6th and the 10th-11th centuries.
In its current form, it is the result of complex composite construction events started in the 12th century and concluded through alternate stages at the end of the 17th century. Built in the 12th century and enlarged in the 14th, the Cathedral has a Renaissance Portal surmounted by a rich cornice, by a beautiful rose window and two small side portals. On the left rises the majestic façade of the elegant Bell Tower decorated with several mullioned windows , which has at its base a arc of step. The Interior of the Cathedral, with three naves, is complemented by a marvellous apse, from a Gothic chancel, from a canopy decorated with Oriental-style capitals and a 13th-century pulpit for the proclamation of biblical readings. Of considerable interest even the crypt, which still preserves the remains of a pre-existing early Christian basilica dating from the 10th century, and the so-called treasure, where there are furniture, paintings and ivory and gold Islamic invoice. The Church reached its peak during the Crusades, acting as a transit point for pilgrims who went to the Holy land.
