One-Legged Spotted Sandpiper

Our first of many shorebird species seen at Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, which is why it is famous. For me this is one of the best places in the world to see and photograph shorebirds, and is my favorite birding location in New Jersey. This guy came flying in and somewhat haphazardly landed on the railing of the Leed's Eco-Trail boardwalk. I thought it was interesting to see a one-legged bird peep, let alone have it land on a boardwalk. Unfortunately, the bird was far away and would not let me approach it. Any idea on how it may of lost a leg?
