The trireme was a powerful and quick battle ship with three rows of oar-men. The ship's had 170 oars (kōpai), arranged in three rows, with one man per oar. Additionally on board there were also 10-20 marines about 5-10 archers, sailors, one helmsan, one carpenter, one flutist, a bow officer, a marine detachment and a general commander.(trierarch). In total the about 200 men .
It is The distance a trireme could travel day depended much on the weather. Generally on a good day, the ship could cover a distance between 50–60 miles in 8 hours.
In 1987 it was reconstructed in a ship-builder in Piraeus, under the instructions of historians, a naval architect and the subsea archaeology. The name of the Athenian-style trireme was Olympias.
Crewed by 170 volunteer and unexoerienced oarsmen, Olympias managed to reach the speed of 9 knots!
