Fort McHenry - Baltimore Harbor
Fort McHenry was the site of the famous bombardment by the British during the War of 1812. During the bombardment, Francis Scott Key was a prisoner aboard a British ship and watched the action from there. He was inspired to write our national anthem when he saw the American flag still waving over the fort at dawn.
"Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
