IS TORONTO READY…for the Hawk?

 

And the glorious return of the RCAF?

 

I'm not sure they are.

 

Less than two weeks now…this lone GOLDEN HAWK featured on the cover of Canadian Aviator last month…will be ripping up the sedate and virginal skies of Toronto. In fact HAWK ONE will be ripping up the skies all over CANADA, this year, in celebration of what, Torontonian?

 

No idea.

 

Yup, too lost in other things, silly things, waterfront things, green things…saving the planet. Shutting down the Island Airport. You know the boring stuff…the make-believe stuff. The Al Gore nonsense.

 

Still no idea? That's what I thought—

 

Celebrating 100 years of powered flight in Canada!

 

The GOLDEN HAWKS (note plural) were created to celebrate the 50th.. And this lone Golden Hawk returns 50 years later to jetblast the 100th for us!

 

For those other Canadians who are a littl' confused by this whole affair…maybe even afraid of this proud display. Don't be.

 

CANADIANS aren't in touch with the CANADA Hawk One represents.

 

A proud Canada. A much different Canada on the world stage then. A red tory Canada then.

 

Not the leftist joke you see before you.

All the other Hawks are gone now—

 

This one refurbed by Michael Potter (yeah, that one, the software giant guy) to celebrate the 100th Year of powered flight in Canada. Coast to coast.

 

And the engine that powers this baby? MADE in TORONTO.

 

…almost 60 years ago.

 

And from before,

 

"Remember long…LONG…LONG before the SNOWBIRDS…there were the GOLDEN HAWKS!

 

Formed in 1959, the Golden Hawks were created to celebrate the 50th Year of powered flight in Canada.

 

They were disbanded in 1964 after 317 airshow demonstrations.

 

The GOLDEN HAWKS pioneered the “starburst” maneuver and the use of two solo pilots working together as part of the overall team demonstration. Pretty much all aerial demonstration teams have adapted this setup since–

 

The GOLDEN HAWKS were famous for wrapping up their demonstration by doing a low level flyby, with canopies open, and waving at the adoring crowds (please Michael Potter get your pilot to do this!).

 

This Canadair Sabre was made in Montreal (under license from North American Aircraft) and the Orenda engine was made in Toronto. How’s that for an all-Canadian effort!

 

A big hip-hip-hoorah to Michael Potter for putting the Golden Hawk back in the air, one more time, for all Canadians.

 

And if my political party was in charge…the Hawks would replace the Snowbirds…post haste!
