60 YEARS AGO ::: HOLLYWOOD comes NORTH … to film a new TV show "HAWKEYE and the LAST OF THE MOHICANS" :::

BREECHLOADIN' RIFLES Hawkeye declares stunned!

Colonel Frasier had just handed Hawkeye the notes from Louis De Grasse's court-martial.

Chingachgook is shocked!

"We hear talk of that … (rifles) shoot more fast!"

The Colonel sums up the gravity of the situation of the lost guns with, "The greatest military development since the discovery of gunpowder!"

This whole TV story is likely based on the "Ferguson Rifle", a breech-loading flintlock firearm created in 1772. The Scotsman, Patrick Ferguson, was a British Army officer who invented this vastly superior rifle … just four years before the American Revolutionary War.

Two hundred of these vastly superior rifles were used, by the British, against the new Americans (Patriots), in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777.

It was interesting for me, to come across this episode, "The Soldier" S1E21, of "Hawkeye and the Last of The Mohicans".

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a French-Canadian, John (Jean) Garand, who actually did change the course of World War II, or in "Hawkeye language", produce "the greatest military development since the discovery of gunpowder," by creating a BETTER BREECHLOADER, for the U.S. Army, an EIGHT SHOOTER vs. the single-shot rifles all other armies of WW II were using at the time.

The Japanese troops were unsympathetically "mowed down" by Americans and their Garand Mk. 1s. The Japanese assumed the Americans were outfitted with rifles, like the Canadian and British Commonwealth troops, they had fought in earlier battles.

They weren't.

The 1957 TV show "HAWKEYE and The LAST of the MOHICANS"

OUTDOOR SCENES were filmed at DECKERS HILL in PICKERING.

INDOOR SCENES (like this one) were filmed in Toronto.

So this trip back in time was helped along because of the great research efforts of others, and the 'Hawkeye' fanship of others.

I learned that "Hawkeye", one of my fav TV shows, was actually filmed in CANADA through one of the links below.

So I had to check things out, MYSELF because of that.

So, do check out these "Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans" links below!
