Innri Hólmskirkja, Iceland (explored 6.8.23)

Innri Akranes hreppur (Inner Akranes district), West Iceland.

Built 1891-1892.

A wooden church originally, but later concrete was added to the outer walls. The church has been protected since 1990.

An interesting and historical fact is that that the Innri-Hólmskirkja church has been built in an area in south-west Iceland where Celtic christian people – mostly Irish monks – settled in the 8th and 9th century and in this settlement period the first Celtic christian churches were built. Celtic settlers were the first to set foot on the island, well before other settlers - Norwegian vikings - began to sail to Iceland.

Mountain Esja in the background.
