Stuðlagil Canyon, a geological masterpiece...Iceland
The turquoise colored glacial river floating through the canyon between high columnar hexagonal basalt rocks creating a magical atmosphere. The regular hexagonal rocks were formed by volcanic activity Without a doubt a stunningly unbelievable geological masterpiece by Mother Nature.
This wonderful piece of nature appeared a few years ago when the Kárahnjúkar Dam, a hydroelectric project, east of the Vatnajökull was built and the water level in this originally wild glacier river dropped by many meters. The river is actually is now a collector of spring-fed streams because the glacial river Jökla had been moved the another valley, creating a lagoon, Hálslón, that collects the water of the Jökla river in a big reservoir, where around the middle of august the reservoir, full of melted glacial water, starts to overflow and floats again into the river, changing the water from beautiful turquoise into a milky grey glacial color and increases the water level in the canyon.
