41228

LMS Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T 41228 of 1946 running light-engine bunker-first at Finedon Road, Wellingborough, July 1963

The locomotive is approaching the site of the Wellingborough Ironworks foundry which had closed in 1960. However, iron ore continued to be mined at the quarries near Sidegate Lane and was still brought down to the furnace site using the metre-gauge line as before. Because of this, rail access from the main line to the foundry site was maintained until iron-ore quarrying ceased in 1966. Between the closure of the foundry in 1960 and that of the quarries in 1966, the iron-ore was trans-shipped within the foundry site to main line trains for haulage to foundries in the North.

The three redundant furnaces (top right of the photograph) did not last much longr: Indeed the one on the right had gone with weeks of this photograph being taken
