Eiffel Tower
This picture is of the Eiffel Tower which, since it was built in 1889, has become a tourist location for people from around the world. “The simple yet masterful 9700 ton iron structure rises nearly 1000 feet into the Parisian sky.” In 2002 the tower received its 200,000,000 visitor and approximately 5.3 million people see it every year. The tower is repainted every 7 years with brown paint. The paint is different colors but painted on in different places, along with the contrast of the ground and sky, to make it look like it is all the same color. In 1940 Adolf Hitler visited Paris and the French were upset that they cut the cables on the elevators. They wanted him to climb all 1792 steps if he wanted a view from the top. While the French guarded their amazing work of engineering in their way, it had to be guarded from other possible attacks after the war kicked off. The biggest danger was that, out of spite, someone might try to bomb it to destroy the morale of the French people. Once the U.S. entered the war it had to be considered a big possibility for a possible attack.
