Great Yarmouth Listed Building Could Be Torn Down

This photo is from December 2024 and shows the back of the buildings.

I also photographed the building(s) back in June shortly after the fire.

More recent news is about possible demolition.

The former Wheatley's jewellery shop is number 16 Northgate Street. The application for demolition is for the building with its chimneys just showing to the left. That's number 17 Northgate Street formerly Northgate Fish and before that a post office.

A structural survey and condition report, submitted with the application, states that number 17 is "completely gutted and is in a dangerous condition".

The walls on both ends of the building, which is Grade II listed, are structurally unsafe and all the floor and roof bridging timbers have been dangerously burnt out, it says.

The main dividing wall between 17 and 18 is "severely damaged and structurally unstable" and could cause the building at 18-20 to collapse.

According to the report, the danger to the public and the adjoining owners and their tenants is high.

A borough council conservation officer who was consulted over the plans has asked for a full structural engineer's report.

They said the information in the application is "not sufficient to justify the demolition of a Grade II listed building".

It was unclear how the building was subdivided and how number 17 could be demolished without causing serious further harm to the structural integrity of number 16, they added.
