-Resto sempre perplesso di fronte alla miopia di tante persone. Molti miei conoscenti, per esempio, sono quotidianamente ossessionati dall'educazione dei figli: si affannano stabilire quale sia il migliore asilo nido, quali siano i pro e contro delle scuole pubbliche e di quelle private, quali siano i più efficaci corsi preparatori al college, come migliorare i punteggi e organizzare le attività supplementari per dare ai figli la chance di entrare in quel dato college, quella scuola elementare, e così via all'infinito. E poi lo stesso ciclo ricomincerà con i nipoti.
Tutta questa gente pensa che il tempo sia cristallizzato, che il futuro sia un'esatta replica del presente.
Se NOI continuiamo ad abbattere le foreste e a distruggere le risorse di ossigeno, cosa respireranno mai, questi benedetti figli, fra venti o trent'anni?
Se avveleniamo i nostri sistemi idrici e i cicli di produzione agricola, cosa mangeranno?
Se ciecamente perseveriamo a sovra produrre fluorocarburi e altre scorie organiche, se creiamo buchi nello strato di ozono, potranno mai questi figli avventurarsi fuori dalle mura domestiche?
Se surriscaldiamo il pianeta creando il cosiddetto effetto serra, per cui gli oceani si alzano inondando le coste, e se mettiamo sotto pressione le faglie continentali e oceaniche, dove vivranno? E non si tratta soltanto dei nostri discendenti: anche i figli e i nipoti che vivranno in Cina, Africa,Australia, o dove si vuole, saranno parimenti esposti, abitando inevitabilmente su questo stesso pianeta.
E si consideri anche il seguente aspetto: se e quando voi doveste reincarnarvi, sarete tra questi figli e nipoti.
Perché dunque darsi tanto pensiero per i voti scolastici o l'ammissione a un dato college, quando è possibile che non esista neppure più il mondo in cui la nostra progenie possa vivere?-

-I am always perplexed in the face of myopia of so many people. Many of my acquaintances, for example, are daily obsessed with the education of their children: the best nursery, what are the pros and cons of public and private schools, what are the most effective college preparatory courses, how to improve scores and organize additional activities to give children the chance to enter at that college, the elementary school, and so on ad infinitum. And then the same cycle will resume with the grandchildren.
All these people think that time is crystallized, that the future is an exact replica of the present.
If WE continue to break the forests and destroy the oxygen resources, what will they ever breathe, these blessed children, among twenty to thirty years?
If WE poison our water systems and agricultural production cycles, what will they eat?
If WE blindly persevere in producing fluorocarbons and other organic slags, if we create holes in the ozone layer, will these children ever venture out of the home wall?
If WE overheat the planet by creating the so-called greenhouse effect, so the oceans rise by flooding their shores, and if we put pressure on continental and oceanic faults, where will they live?
And it's not just our descendants: even the children and grandchildren who live in China, Africa, Australia, or wherever they want, living inevitably on this planet also will be exposed.
And consider the following as well: if and when you reincarnate, you will be among these children and grandchildren.
So why do we think so much about school grades or admission to a college when it is possible that there is no longer the world where our progeny can live?-
