Once upon a time

In Scandinavian mythology, every farm had its own Tomten - the back yard elf's, a kind of small farmer with supernatural powers who took care of the farm, watched over the good fortune of the family and property.Usually they were invisible and they showed only to the owner of the house acting only at night. The figure seems to have been the origin by Lari in m. Roman. In the collective imagination, the elf's was the first man who lived and who was raised in this farm and that after death he was there to take care and bring luck to those who live there. In old oral tradition was often imagined an elder small man with the long white beard dressed all in gray and a pointed hood. In old oral tradition was often imagined an elder small man with the long white beard dressed all in gray and a pointed hood. He was irritable temperament and had to be careful not to neglect the home, particularly the farm animals the barn and hayloft his favorite place, and to treat him with respect. As thanks it rewarded with a bowl of porridge which was particularly greedy. In 1871 Viktor Rydberg, Swedish writer wrote the short story "The Adventures of the little Vigg Christmas Eve" and later in 1881 the poem "Tomten" illustrated by Jenny Nyström. Little elf drawn by Nystrom became Jultomten (translated Santa Claus), cheerful dwarf in gray suit jacket and with a red cap on his head.

Santa Claus designed by Jenny Nyström is gradually went to overlap at the St. Nicholas American, described for the first time in the story of Clement Clarke Moore in 1823 "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (Christmas Eve) where St Nicholas was described as a big man, overweight with a good-natured air, red long dress trimmed with white fur, snow-white beard and a red nose like a cherry transported by flying sleigh. In the 30 'Haddon Sundblom, professional illustrator, designed the Coke commercial in which featured Santa Claus as we know it today.

Haddon, born in Michigan, was of Scandinavian origin. For this reason, like to think (especially the Swedes) that he has drawn inspiration not only from the American novel but also from the illustrations by Jenny Nyström. Since then, Santa Claus and the Coca-Cola are brought together regularly in Christmas advertising become the jewel of the multinational, up to the present day.
