The road over the bridge is the very busy A12 trunk road which is also the main north - south artery through the town centre.
The cranes in the background are on the outer harbour and beyond them is the North Sea. Behind me, Lake Lothing, as this waterway is known, continues westwards for a couple of miles, lined with formerly busy docks and quaysides, many but not all, now empty, or being converted to sprawling retail parks.
At the far end of Lake Lothing lies Oulton Broad, separated by a lock, keeping fresh and saltwater apart. There is also another lifting bridge at Oulton Broad.
