Parish records for 1654 re-discovered 1966 3 orrell

Parish records for 1654 re-discovered.
Some extremely fragile, but readable, parts of a 300-year-old parish register of St Helen's Church, Hollinfare, are among a collection of records which have been re-discovered there by the Vicar (Father J.A. Orrell). They were lying underneath more recent records in the church's strongbox.
Thr fragments, which, says the Vicar, look "as if they have come through fire and flood," cover the years from 1654 to 1723 and the other "finds" are the first complete registers dating from that year until 1783, and from then until the early part of the 19th century.
They bring to light all the registered births, marriages and deaths, not only in Hollins Green, but also in Irlam, Cadishead, and Partington, during the period. The probable reason is that St. Helen's was one of the four places of worship in the area - a church has been on the site since 1498 and was rebuilt in 1735 and 1880.
The entries were made in chronological and not classified sequence. In addition to the relevant names (some of which have been perpetuated) and dates, the records also reveal the status of the people mentioned.
The word "pauper" is written in capitals against many of the names and the word "base" is written after some births, to indicate that they were illegitimate.
One disaster recorded involved the drowning of seven people while they were attempting to cross the River Mersey by ferry. A typed copy of some of the earlier records was made by the Rev. Mr Firth, who was vicar for 23 years until his retirement in 1947.
Mrs M. Beeston, librarian in-charge of Irlam County Library, who is particularly interested in local history, visited the vicarage recently to read the records, and subsequently borrowed them to put on display in the Library.
Father Orrell told the "Guardian" that eventually he would probably pass them on to Mr J.R. Rimmer, Director of Warrington Museum, subject to permission of the Church.
