Palazzo Vecchio

The Palazzo Vecchio is one of the main buildings in Florence that people flock to see.

It is a crenellated palace which means it has battlements as part of its design.

It has a 94m tower and was built between 1299-1314 by Arnolfo di Cambio.

Initially, it was used a a seat of government and would be used later by senior republicans in high office.

Dante would have seen this building unlike the Duomo which was built later.

Cosmo 1 turned it into his ducal residence in 1540 creating a beautiful interior. The exterior remains unchanged.

The palace took on its name- Old Palace when the ducal court moved out to the Palazzo Pitti.
