Hermes Typewriters c1950s
This very stylish modernist Swiss lapel badge (maker, Paul Kramer, Neuchâtel), dates to the 1950s and symbolises E.Paillard's, Hermes typewriter range of machines. The clean lines of the trademark mirror the chic styling of their typewriters (in all probability a Hermes Baby), as well as the precision engineering that's so typical of Swiss products and amplified of course through its renowned watchmaking industry. The Swiss company that made the Hermes range was E. Paillard & Co. of Yverdon in the canton of Vaud.
Hermes typewriters debuted in the 1920s and its most significant range was the Hermes Baby, an astonishingly portable typewriter for the period with typical Hermes build quality. The Hermes Baby was introduced in 1935 and quickly became the preferred choice of authors and writers of the day. Hermes promotional literature played on its lightness, compact size and portability- in many ways the first successful type of laptop and highly sought-after. It was often described as the world's most popular 'small' typewriter and its mechanisms remained virtually unchanged for the duration of its four decade or so production period. In English speaking countries, the Hermes Baby was also known as the 'Featherweight' or the 'Hermes Rocket'.
