Vishukkani - Did you notice anything...?

The scene of a "Vishukkani" put up in the Morning of "Vishu", festival of Kerala, South India. .... Did you notice anything....., I saw it only after viewing on my computer....!

We celebrated "Vishu" yesterday (15th April). One of the many interesting things is "Vishukkani" (The first thing you see in the morning) that is set at a sacred place inside the house. The previous day the things you see will be placed before people go to sleep. In the morning an elderly person will get up earliy, well before sunrise, and light up the oil lamps and see it for the first time. Then each member of the family is braught with their eyes closed to see "Vishukkani".

It is believed auspicious to see flowers, fruits, rice, new cloth, gold, silver, money etc Usually with the Idol of Lord Krishna as "Vishukkani".

People give money as present to their younger ones, which the receiver believes auspicious for a whole year. In Northern Kerala, people also burst firecrackers after seeing Vishukkani.

The verbal meaning of Vishu-kani: Kani is the first thing you see in the morning. Vishu stands for the day when Day and Nights are equal. It is also a festival related to farming. The preparations for the next farming season (Monsoon) will begin this day.
