Codex Selden

Mexico, Western Oaxaca, AD 1556-60

Deerskin, gesso, and pigment (20 leaves)

This codex reads from bottom to top and illustrates the dynastic history of Jaltepec, or Añute. These pages recount the story of its ruler Lady Six Monkey, a contemporary of Lord Eight Deer. The narrative starts in the lower left and depicts her marriage to Eleven Wind, which begins with the exchange of costly gifts and dancing followed by a nuptial bath. Six Monkey later consults with advisers, defeats her enemies in battle, and gives birth to two sons.
