Memento Mori, a written tree

- "Memento Mori", a written tree.
- This artwork, an iron tree, placed at the new cemetery Zevenberg in Fluitenberg, municipality Hoogeveen, is written and designed by designer/artist Albert Geertjes from Eelderwolde. The artwork is a gift of !Pet / Hoogeveensche Courant to all residents of Hoogeveen.
- The tree is eight meters high. The trunk consists of text, a poem of 150 characters about life and impermanence. The text is written to give the 'image' content and to construct the trunk.
The texts used for the branches are directly derived from 150 years obituaries in Hoogeveen.
- Memento mori (Latin: "Remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.
In art, memento mori are artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality.

- Dit kunstwerk, een ijzeren boom, voor de nieuwe begraafplaats Zevenberg te Fluitenberg, gemeente Hoogeveen, is geschreven en ontworpen door Albert Geertjes uit Eelderwolde. Het kunstwerk is een geschenk van !pet/Hoogeveensche Courant aan alle inwoners van Hoogeveen.
- De boom is acht meter hoog. De stam bestaat uit tekst: een gedicht van 150 letters over leven en vergankelijkheid. De tekst is speciaal geschreven om ‘het beeld’ inhoud te geven en om de stam te construeren.
De teksten, gebruikt voor de takken, zijn rechtstreeks ontleend aan 150 jaar rouwadvertenties in Hoogeveen.
- Memento mori is een Latijnse zin die traditioneel wordt vertaald als 'Gedenk te sterven'. Een vrijere vertaling is 'Bedenk dat u sterfelijk bent'.
