Alchemilla mollis

- Alchemilla mollis, the garden lady's-mantle or lady's-mantle, is an herbaceous perennial plant native to southern Europe and grown throughout the world as an ornamental garden plant.
It grows 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) tall, with leaves that are palmately veined, with a scalloped and serrated margin. The chartreuse yellow flowers are held in dense clusters above the foliage.
The plant is often grown as a ground cover, and is especially valued for the leaves in wet weather, as the water beads and sparkles on the leaves. This is due to the remarkable dewetting properties of the leaves, whereby the contact force between the water and the leaf is so disfavoured that a thin layer of air penetrates the solid-liquid interface.
These beads of water were considered by alchemists to be the purest form of water. They utilised this water in their quest to turn base metal into gold. Hence the name Alchemilla.

- Fraaie vrouwenmantel (Alchemilla mollis), ook wel vrouwenmantel en leeuwenklauw genoemd, is een overblijvende plant, die behoort tot de rozenfamilie (Rosaceae). De plant komt van nature voor in de Karpaten en wordt in de siertuin gebruikt, maar is ook verwilderd. De plant zaait gemakkelijk uit.
Fraaie vrouwenmantel bloeit van mei tot de herfst met 5 mm grote, geelgroene bloemen, die in een tuilvormig los meertakkig bijscherm zijn gerangschikt.
Vrouwenmantel is vooral bekend door de eigenschap dat na een regenbui waterdruppels als parels op het blad blijven liggen.
De geslachtsnaam ‘Alchemilla’ slaat op het gebruik van de plant door alchemisten (dit woord gaat terug op het Arabische woord ‘alkemelyeh’, wat ‘kleine toverachtige’ betekent). De alchemisten verzamelden de druppels die ’s morgens op de plant liggen (deze worden voor een deel door de dauw veroorzaakt, en voor een deel door de plant zelf), om er de Steen der Wijzen mee te vervaardigen. De soortnaam ‘vulgaris’ betekent gewoon, ter onderscheiding van andere Alchemilla-soorten.
