Alternative commercial gear on the Columbia River

Tests are underway to try out different alternatives to gillnet fishing for salmon in the Columbia River. The hope is that a new method of commercial fishing can be devised that is easier on the ESA listed and native fish that must be released from the nets. This is a purse seining boat rigged for the Columbia River.

Check out this youtube video of the Colville tribe fishing with their new boat. Skamokawa gillnetters had a hand in laying out and testing the Colvilles' boat a while ago.
