old piling
Since we have several feet of tidal exchange here, but all fresh water, old pilings make interesting gardens. Birds and wind drop seeds on the pilings, and the rotting wood makes a great substrate. Tides water the seeds twice a day and soon the pilings are covered in plant life. Everything from Spruce and Cedar trees, Chatterbox orchids, willows and grasses all make a life on top of the old pilings. A friend of mine once counted twenty different species on one piling.
