River canyon
This is a Mandelbrot set fractal created with FractalWorks, a free, high performance fractal renderer for Macintosh computers. You can download fractalworks and try it yourself at the FractalWorks download site.
The image was rendered in 3D using distance estimate data, and the wavy pattern was added using a new feature of FractalWorks that adds a sine wave pattern to the height of the plot based on the fractional iteration value.
I think it looks like a river canyon, with waves of sand. I added the clouds in Photoshop to complete the effect.
