Mandelbrot 2_17

This is a Mandelbrot set fractal rendered in 3D using FractalWorks, a free, high performance fractal renderer for Macintosh computers.

 

I wrote FractalWorks. If you have a Macintosh running OS 10.4 or later you can download it at the link below and try it out. It's currently free.

 

The URL to recreate this image is embedded in the "Description" field in the metadata for the image.

 

The image is rendered as a height map, where the height for each pixel in the fractal is calculated using Distance Estimate (DE) values, which are based on the derivative of the iterated Mandelbrot function. The distance estimate values are run through a non-linear scaling algorithm, then used to render a 3D shape in OpenGL
