Mission San Diego de Alcalá, San Diego California
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was the first Franciscan mission established in The Californias, which were a province of New Spain. The mission was founded in 1769 by the Spanish friar, Junípero Serra to serve an area inhabited by the Kumeyaay indigenous people. In 1822, after the Mexican War of Independence against Spain, it became a territory of Mexico.
In 1834, the territorial governor confiscated all the missions. The properties were divided up and given to military officers who had fought in the War of Independence, but in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln restored ownership of the properties to the Roman Catholic Church. Finally in 1941, Mission San Diego once again became a parish church and is still an active church today.
