Kīlauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawai'ian Islands. It is the most active of the five volcanoes that form the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Located along the southern shore of the island in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the volcano is about 300,000 and 600,000 years old and it emerged above sea level about 100,000 years ago. It is about 4,200 ft tall (1280 m) at it's highest point, with a 540 ft (165 m) deep circular caldera at its summit. It is said that Kilauea is the home to Pele, the volcano goddess of ancient Hawaiian legends.
