Bacharach am Rhein is a small ancient town on the west bank of the Rhein River. It existed before the Romans as a Celtic settlement. Its name Baccaracum came from the God of Bacchus because it supplied wine to all the territories. Above the town looms Stahleck Castle which is now used as a youth hostel.
