Roatán is one of Honduras’s Caribbean Bay Islands. It is part of the huge Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and is known for its beaches, dive sites and marine life. Cruise ships dock in the capital of Coxen Hole and nearby Mahogany Bay. To the east are smaller settlements, including the Garifuna village of Punta Gorda. The tropical island rests on an exposed ancient coral reef, rising to about 270 metres (890 ft) above sea level.
