Bill O'Brien, Irish-American sculptor

This photo was taken of Bill O'Brian, an Irish-American sculptor who resided in New York City during the 1940's. As well as populating the civil service community, athletics, the military, and various regions of the United States, the Irish had another contribution to American culture: arts and entertainment. Although initial Irish entertainment was often scorned (due to its crass nature), it redefined itself over time. Whether on the stage, the silver screen, or in literature, appreciation for Irish-American work became more widely accepted (McCaffrey 1992). Today, Irish-American influence can be found in the performing arts, on television (notably in police or fire department-focused venues), or in the music community.
