Carcassonne
Carcassonne is a fortified town in the French département of Aude in the Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées region in the south-east of the country. It has a population of around 47,634 (2008).
A substantial medieval fortress or citadel, The Cité de Carcassonne, for which the town is best known, stands atop a hill overlooking the remainder of the town and the snow-capped mountains of Pyrénées. The citadel has two outer walls, 53 towers, a drawbridge and barbicans. It was placed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997 and is arguably, apart from Paris, one of the most popular tourist sites in France.
A walkway inside the outer wall of the fortress encircles the inner cité and it is possible to walk all the way around it and under some of the many arches and towers.
