Long Island RR RS3 #1556 at Flushing, New York
A late 1955 Alco product, LIRR #1556 hauled freight and passengers out of New York City for 23 years prior to being retired. This Labor Day weekend scene from 1971 shows the four-axle workhorse rolling a short freight pass the station platforms in suburban Flushing, NY. The loco also spent eight years on the roster of the Gettysburg RR.
The #1556, which has been restored to its original gray and orange LIRR livery, is currently on display at the Railroad Museum of Long Island in Riverhead, NY.
