Edward Downard (1881-1941) Album
by twigged1
Edward Downard served as a Staff-Sergeant in the No. 2 Canadian General Hospital and the No. 16 Canadian General Hospital. These photos show daily life at the No. 2 Canadian General Hospital in Le Tréport, France. I believe that they were taken by a local French photographer named E. Arnault who sold his images as postcards to the soldiers stationed in Le Tréport.
Edward Downard was in charge of the linen stores at the hospital and there are several photos of him with his stores and on the way to the laundry in Dieppe.
Most of these postcards were sent to his fiancée Bessie Melville and the inscriptions sometimes tell of Edward's daily life at the hospital.
[A note on the organization of these images. The photos are numbered in the order that they appear in Ed's album. If the postcard had an inscription on the back, an image of the back (labelled "b") follows the front image. If there was no inscription on the back, I did not include it here.]
