Old Virginia Brick

by P F McFarland

I took these photos back in early June, 2015. They are a record of the remains of the Old Virginia Brick factory, which was put up for auction on June 23, 2015. They couldn't find any buyers for their products anymore because bricks just aren't being used that much in new home construction.

Begun in 1890, the company had four properties spread out over two counties. One of the interesting things was the 9/11 Memorial constructed of two steel beams from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Originally slated to be sold with the main property, then to be auctioned off separately, it was finally decided to donate the memorial to the city of Salem, VA, the home of Old Virginia Brick.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the place, as I don't think all the parcels were bought by the same concern. The new owner of the main plant says he's still open to all possibilities.
